Transformational Tango

Argentine Tango: A Powerful Psychological Tool for Self-Discovery

When we enter the embrace, we bring more than presence, posture and technique. We bring attachment histories, relational imprints, defended places, longings to be seen, fears of inadequacy, habits of control, and strategies for self-protection. The body remembers. The nervous system responds.

While technique, connection, and clear communication are often emphasized, many dancers still feel something is missing. The real transformation happens when we recognize and address the underlying psychological patterns that limit the fluidity of movement and defensive muscular armor that blocks our connection with others.

Transformational Tango is here to support you to do just that. Our approach offers a clear psychological framework for understanding partner dynamics, practical methods to surface and shift limiting patterns, and embodied tools to deepen your connection, presence, and the quality of your embrace. Whether you’re stalled in a dance plateau, yearning for more spontaneity, or tired of repeating the same patterns, Transformational Tango opens a new path—accessible even to novice dancers and without a hefty price tag.

The only requirements are genuine curiosity, an openness to change, and a willingness to engage in inner work.

Embrace the discovery process and transform your dance from the inside out!

Why this program came into being

Where Psychology Meets the Dance Floor

As seasoned Argentine tango dancers and clinical specialists, we’ve lived both sides of the dance the exhilaration of connection and the frustration of disconnection. Over years of studying, practicing and dancing, we became fascinated by the psychological undercurrents that shape every step, embrace, individual dance encounter and even the collective dynamics on the dance floor.

This program is the culmination of our shared professional expertise and lived experience as dancers. It was created for those who wish to elevate their dance, enrich their embrace, and deepen dance connections.

Born from a passion to bring greater meaning, presence, and emotional intelligence to the dance floor, this program invites you to explore tango as a path of personal and relational transformation.

Are you ready to awaken to a more conscious way of moving and being?

A space where psychology, embodied presence, and the mystery of human connection meet in the dance.

This experience is about more than just learning, it’s about awakening!

Evidence-Informed, Embodied, and Transformational: A Statement on the Research Behind Our Approach.

Our program is grounded in contemporary research from psychology, mindfulness, somatic-based and polyvagal-informed approaches.

When the dance becomes a doorway, inviting you into a living relational field— an entirely hidden psychological world opens up for you to investigate. This is shadow work in motion.

Module 1

The Psychology of the Dance: Psyche & Soma

Relationships are dynamic, embodied and profoundly complex. Every interaction is a living process shaped by the subtle choreography of powerful psychological responses.

Each dance moment is shaped not only by the rhythms of the music and the movements of the body, they are also fashioned by the silent messages conveyed by the nervous system and hidden forces of the unconscious.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced dancer, embracing these psychological elements will not only elevate your dancing but they will also enrich your personal relationships beyond the dance floor.

Module 2

Collective Motifs and Archetypal Patterns of Tango

Argentine Tango has a rich, colorful, and compelling history brought about by an unprecedented mix of different cultures. Imbued with collective motifs and all-encompassing patterns, this dance portrays cultural images that belong to the collective.

The collective level of the unconscious connects all of humanity across time and culture. Even in today's disconnected world Argentine tango can provide a sense of connection and belonging regardless of nationality, race, creed, or culture.

Nonetheless, these collective motifs and archetypal patterns also have the power to express and exert their influence in our lives. In fact, they inform our perceptions, impact our decision making, and truly shape behaviors that become the rhythms of daily life.

Module 3

Tango as a Tool for Psychological Development

The process of psychological development entails specific phases that if all goes well can ultimately lead to the establishment of what is known as the ego-Self axis. However, in order for this vital axis to be formed the ego must undergo each specific stage that is mirrored in the dance. In fact, just like tango this process happens one step at a time.

Given that our relationships are often guided by hidden forces, it is common for our day-to-day encounters to become infused with heightened emotions and strong reactions. When this happens we have a tendency to blame, point the finger 'out there' and subsequently miss the opportunity to engage with these experiences as an inner process. Likewise, dance partners are remarkably clever vehicles for eliciting all kind of emotions, reactions and experiences.

When we learn how to listen and engage with our emotions, reactions, and experiences as a psychological process, it is possible to bring deeper understanding to what is arising and transform these moments into opportunities to learn more about ourselves and one another.

Module 4

Practical Steps to Transform your Dance

We have carefully curated this module to provide you with exercises that invite an inner process. These exercises will serve as powerful tools to undergo a psychological inquiry. You will be guided into a process aimed for you to investigate patterns of behavior from an embodied perspective. Each step will provide you with opportunities for self-reflection and practical steps that will instigate a dialogue between psyche and soma.

When you learn how to reveal bodily attitudes, uncover restrictive patterns, and illuminate shadow material you can awaken instinctual energies that have the power to bring more authenticity and greater freedom into your life. In turn, you will experience enhanced connections  vital for co-creating improvised dance moves with your partner and for bringing greater spontaneity to the dance.

Ultimately, when you begin to welcome what arises within the embrace and invite a psychological inquiry you can bring greater awareness to patterns of relating that are limiting dance movements and inhibiting connections.

Meet the Co-founders of Transformational Tango

Wendy Balconi, Ph.D., LCSW

(Co-Founder and Course Instructor)

Wendy has a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology with an emphasis in Somatic Studies. As a clinical licensed specialist, researcher, and avid tango dancer she views the body as a living gateway to inner wisdom, creativity, and transformation. Wendy maintains a thriving private practice in Scottsdale, AZ, where her work centers on embodied expressions and the integration of psyche and soma.

Her doctoral dissertation, Solvitur Ambulando: An Embodied Experience of Argentine Tango explored the psychological dynamics and transformative potential of the dance relationship. Through in-depth qualitative research, Wendy illuminated how the practice of tango reveals unconscious patterns of relating, exposes psychological defenses, and invites the possibility of genuine connection and wholeness. Her findings demonstrate that tango can serve as a powerful psychological and somatic tool, one that helps individuals identify habitual ways of being, deepen self-awareness, and move toward meaningful and integrative embodied transformation.

Drawing from her extensive clinical experience and research, Wendy designs workshops, training programs, and individual sessions that blend depth psychology, somatic awareness, and creative movement. Her programs support dancers, therapists, and seekers alike in reconnecting with their instinctual intelligence and reclaiming the body as an instrument of healing, imagination, and more soulful presence.

Wendy’s approach invites participants to engage life as a dance, and as a living dialogue between the conscious and unconscious. Enduring transformation unfolds not through analysis alone, but through the wisdom and language of the lived-body.

Marc Adams, LMSW, MBA

(Co-Founder and Course Instructor)

Marc is a clinically licensed master social worker in private practice in Scottsdale, AZ, specializing in existential and Jungian-oriented counseling. His work invites clients to explore life’s deeper questions, uncover meaning beneath the struggle, and awaken to new possibilities of being. Through a depth-oriented lens, Marc helps individuals transform habitual patterns and outdated narratives into authentic, embodied ways of living and relating.

With more than two decades of experience as a dedicated Argentine tango dancer, Marc brings a rare and dynamic integration of psychology and embodiment into his clinical practice, Existential Counseling. His dance journey began in classical ballet and evolved through a lifelong exploration of diverse cultural forms, each shaping his nuanced understanding of rhythm, connection, and human expression.

Ultimately, Argentine tango became one of Marc’s most profound teachers. The attunement, presence, and responsiveness that define the dance also mirror the same principles essential to the therapeutic relationship. In his work, Marc integrates these embodied insights to foster deep self-awareness, emotional resonance, and transformative connection both within oneself and in relationship to others.

As a course instructor and co-founder, Marc offers an approach to self development that is as intellectually rich as it is experientially alive, inviting participants to engage in a meaningful and transformative process.

Our Intention: Inner Work as an Act of Service to Our Communities

The abrazo is not only physical structure; it is a psychological event. Every tanda reveals us.

Tango invites the unconscious into motion.

The milonga becomes a dynamic projection screen. We may idealize a partner, diminish ourselves, judge another’s capacity, crave affirmation, or react defensively to perceived rejection. These experiences are not signs that something is wrong. They are evidence that something meaningful is trying to become known.

Without awareness, we act out these projections—assumptions, judgments, longings, and fears. With awareness, relationships becomes a powerful space for inner work.

Transformational Tango is a powerful journey into the psychology of what emerges between dance partners.

What emerges between dance partners is not random — dance relationships are shaped by both personal and archetypal dynamics. For example, the leader-follower polarity can constellate themes of agency, surrender, trust, power, and receptivity.

Inner work in tango means recognizing when we are dancing with a person — and when we are dancing with a projection.

It asks us to pause internally:
What is being activated in me?
Is this about my partner, or about my own unfinished material?
Can I remain present rather than defend or collapse?

Transformational Tango is founded on the understanding that tango is already a teacher. The question is whether we are willing to listen more deeply to the hidden conversations occurring beneath the steps.

To take responsibility for one’s inner landscape is an act of psychological maturity — and a profound act of service for the community.

Over the past decades, a growing body of evidence has demonstrated that transformational change does not occur through intellectual understanding alone, nor through movement in isolation — but through the integration of body, mind, and relational context.

Why integration matters:

Cognitive insight (intellectual awareness) and somatic experience (felt sense) together create transformative learning. Research in experiential education and psychotherapy indicates that change is most enduring when it is both felt in the body and reflected upon with consciousness.

This is why our program integrates:

⦿ Embodied practices — to access non-verbal material held in the nervous system (polyvagal-informed

⦿ Psychological inquiry — to deepen insight and elucidate deeper meaning

⦿ Relational attunement — to practice presence through expert guided embodied exercises

⦿ Applied tools — 8 essential inner-skills that you can apply on the dance floor and into everyday life
